CMD Business Award 2025: Celebrating Excellence and Dialogue

Last year, the Center for Media and Dialogue (CMD) successfully hosted the CMD Award 2024, an
inspiring evening that brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs, journalists, diplomats, and
community members under one roof. The event highlighted the achievements of Somali-owned
businesses across Europe, while also creating a platform for dialogue, networking, and collaboration. It
was more than just an award ceremony, it became a meeting point where ideas were exchanged,
partnerships were born, and the Somali business community received recognition on an international
stage.
Building on last year’s success, CMD is proud to announce the CMD Business Award 2025, which will
take place on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Wegastraat 77, 2516 AN, Den Haag, Netherlands. This
year’s edition aims to be even bigger and more impactful, shining a spotlight not only on business
excellence but also on the importance of community growth, resilience, and dialogue.
Our goal this year is to continue honoring outstanding entrepreneurs and professionals while also
expanding the platform for conversation between the business world, policymakers, and media
representatives.

moments that celebrate the achievements of the Somali community and its contributions to society at
large.

Na het grote succes van de CMD Award 2024 organiseert het Center for Media and Dialogue (CMD)
opnieuw een inspirerende en feestelijke editie in 2025.
Vorig jaar bracht de prijsuitreiking ondernemers, professionals en gemeenschapsleiders samen in een
unieke bijeenkomst waar talent, innovatie en ondernemerschap uit de Somalische gemeenschap in de
schijnwerpers werden gezet.
Het evenement bood niet alleen erkenning voor uitzonderlijke prestaties, maar ook een waardevol
netwerk platform waar ideeën, ervaringen en samenwerkingen werden gedeeld.
Op basis van de positieve reacties en de energie die het evenement in 2024 losmaakte, heeft CMD

CMD Hosts Dinner for Somali MP in Holland to Strengthen Community-Government Ties

Utrecht,Netherlands-A member of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, MP Sheikh Aweys Omar, held a high-level community engagement event with members of the Somali diaspora in the Netherlands during a working visit aimed at strengthening dialogue and cooperation between the diaspora and Somali state institutions.

The meeting, which took place over a formal dinner in the city of Utrecht, was organized by the Center for Media and Dialogue (CMD), a community-based platform dedicated to fostering constructive dialogue among Somali communities across Europe.

The event brought together Somali community leaders, activists, and members of the Dutch-Somali population. Discussions focused on Somalia’s ongoing security challenges, recent political developments, and the critical role the diaspora can play in promoting peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa nation.

Abdullahi Mohamed Hussein, known as Taajiroow, head of CMD, opened the forum with welcoming remarks. He highlighted the importance of such gatherings in fostering mutual understanding and bridging the gap between government representatives and the diaspora.

“CMD serves as a bridge that connects government institutions and community voices. We believe differing opinions are not a threat but a strength. Our unity must be preserved, even as we engage in healthy debates,” said Taajiroow.

MP Sheikh Aweys Omar thanked the community for the warm reception and provided insights into the current security landscape in Somalia. He discussed the government’s continued operations against insurgent groups and acknowledged the progress made under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration.

“When President Hassan took office, one of his top priorities was securing Mogadishu and its outskirts from anti-peace factions. Our forces have pushed them out of their former strongholds,” said the MP. He commended the bravery and dedication of Somali security forces and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring peace.

The forum also featured contributions from notable diaspora figures, including Fatumo Farah and Hanad Abdulahi Hussein, both members of the Holland Regional Council, and Mohamed Osman Guure of FSAN. Leaders from the Somali community in Utrecht, including Fodere, Caabi, and Ahmed, also attended and actively participated in the dialogue.

The evening concluded with an open Q&A session, allowing community members to voice concerns and pose questions directly to the MP, reflecting the event’s inclusive and participatory spirit.

Defying Norms: Embracing Diversity and Self-Love in the Era of Social Media

Kemer-Antaliya; A significant conference addressing the impact of social media on European youth commenced today in Kemer-Antalya, Turkey, and is set to continue until October 27, 2024. This important event, organized by the Center for Media and Dialogue, has drawn young participants from various countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, Romania, Georgia, Finland, Armenia, and Turkey.

The conference aims to provide a platform for young individuals to engage in discussions aboutthe ways in which the digital landscape affects their lives, particularly concerning self-image and personal confidence. A key focus will be on how the imagery shared on various social media platforms influences perceptions of beauty and attractiveness, often shaping young people’s views of themselves and others.

In today’s digital agе, social Mеdia  has bеcomе a significant source of information for young pеoplе, including content related to body image. On onе hand, it offеrs valuablе rеsourcеs promoting body positivity and sеlf-accеptancе, empowering youth to develop a positive body image through sеlf-lovе. Howеvеr, instant access to such information also brings negative consequences, such as cybеrbullying and harmful comparisons, leading to sеvеrе mental health issues among young individuals

Abdulahi Mohamed  Chairman of the Center for Media and Dialogue, highlighted the significance of the conference as an opportunity for European youth to delve into the complexities of living in a digital age. He expressed the need for young people to understand both the challenges and opportunities that social media presents. Abdulahi  noted that he has brought 48 young delegates to Antalya as part of this legacy project, aiming to foster a constructive dialogue among them.

In our current digital environment, social media has become an integral source of information for youth, particularly concerning topics related to body image. On one hand, social media can serve as a powerful tool for promoting body positivity and encouraging self-love. Many influencers and campaigns advocate for a healthy self-image, empowering young people to embrace their uniqueness and develop a more positive body image.

Conversely, the rapid accessibility of information and images on social media can lead to detrimental effects. Young individuals may encounter unrealistic standards of beauty, prompting harmful comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. This phenomenon often manifests in bullying and can contribute to mental health issues, including anxiety and depression.

As the conference unfolds, participants will engage in workshops, discussions, and presentations aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of these issues. They will explore strategies for navigating social media more mindfully and harnessing its potential for positive impact while mitigating its negative consequences. Through these discussions, the organizers hope to equip young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to create a healthier relationship with social media.

Training for the youth on anti-racism was held on March 20-29 2022 in Batumi, Georgia

Center For Media And Dialogue delegation has attended and organised a training on anti-racism for the youth in Batumi, Georgia. The training was attended by eight European countries who raised awareness about the dangers of racism and it is implications on the society.

Georgia is a country in the Caucasus mountains at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bounded by the Black Sea to the west, by Russia to the north and east, by Turkey to the southwest, by Armenia to the south, and by Azerbaijan to the southeast. The country covers an area of 69,700 square kilometres (26,900 sq mi), and has a population of 3.7 million people. Tbilisi is its capital as well as its largest city, and is home to roughly a third of the Georgian population.

The young people who participated in this training exchanged views on racism, and how to prevent it and based their discussions on how to eradicate racism in the world.

 Some of the young people who participated in the training acknowledged that they had learned a lot about racism and that they would stand up for the cause of racism around the world.

The training, which began on March 20 and ended on March 29 this year, was funded by Erasmus plus International and co-hosted by Millennium Georgia. All participants has all benefited and would like to meet in another meeting in the near future.

CMD to hold a conference on role of media in peace building and Somali’s vision 2016 in Poland
Center for Media and Dialogue has announced to hold a conference that will illustrate the role of media in peace process and the vision of 2016 will be held in Warsaw in Poland.
 The chairman of Center For Media and Dialogue Mr. Bile Gurhan told the media houses the conference will be held in September 7 2015 which will take place Warsaw city of Poland. Mr. Gurhan said the conference will continue for four days where the experts and media veterans will discuss the role of the media in peace process and the vision of 2016.
 The manager of Foundation for Somalia Abdikadir Gabeyre Farah said his organization will sponsor that conference.
Both Gurhan and Farah stressed the need of media to play a great role in peace process and national developments and the importance of the 2016 Vision.
Media experts also agreed that it is crucial and important that media houses should promoted peace and reconciliation process during their meeting in Rotterdam in Holland. Over 50 participants are expected to attend the conference in Poland including, Radio and TV managers, editors, media-owners and correspondents from various media houses those are coming from different countries namely Somalia, Kenya, USA, Canada, UK, Sweden, Holland, Norway, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Finland and Denmark
